Rotary
Lights Exceed All Expectations
On behalf of the Waunakee
Rotary Club I invite all of you to attend our new light display
in Waunakee’s Murphy Park. One of our younger members, Tom Reis, had a
vision to light a beautiful park and after a year’s worth
of effort by several club members
it became a reality. An estimated 100,000 lights compliment
the beautiful bridges and stream that run through Murphy Park.
The $40,000 cost of the project was largely offset by several
generous donations from local businesses and individuals.
I
want to extend my gratitude to all of the committee members
that planned and worked for months to make this a wonderful
event. The Rotary Lights are on every evening from 5 to 9
pm and the feedback has been outstanding from our visitors.
We have had some local families visit the site multiple times
and we encourage everyone to tell their friends and family
about our project.
The most
rewarding feedback came in the form of a letter written by
Betty Barbian of Waunakee. Betty planted a blue spruce tree
in the park in 1973 to honor her husband Fritz Barbian that
had recently passed away. The tree is beautiful and now stands
three stories tall. We couldn’t even light up all lights we
put on the tree because of a lack of necessary power to that
area of the park. We are honored to light Betty’s tree and
will add even more lights to it next year along with a memorial
plaque honoring Fritz.
It is a very exciting time
to be a Waunakee Rotarian. I am honored to serve the club
and will do my best to continue making the year rewarding
for all. Local needs are always important and please approach
the board with any new service opportunities that exist. In
the future we plan to spend any excess donations from Rotary
Lights on local causes. Together we can truly make a difference
and have lots of fun doing it.
Sincerely,
Greg C. Garton Jr.
